Throwback Thursday Video – Tommy Hearns Turns Back The Clock

In our Throwback Thursday video, Tommy Hearns turns back the clock against Virgil Hill.

It’s June 1991. A post-prime Tommy Hearns returns to Caesers, the site of all of his Fabulous Four contests, to challenge for a 6th world title against undefeated WBA Light Heavyweight champion Virgil Hill.

A member of the US Olympic team which took 9 golds in the Los Angeles games in 1984 and included star fighters Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker and Mark Breland, Hill’s silver medal win and early professional successes had gone understated. By the time he met Hearns in 91, he was 30-0, a champion of almost 4 years with 10 title defenses, and a man still in search of the breakout win that would put him on the map. Entering as a heavy betting favourite against the popular but faded Hitman, this had all the hallmarks of being that fight for Hill.

Hearns hadn’t read the script and we would instead be treated to one of the great veteran performances and truly logic defying bouts in the sport’s history with the Detroit fighter making a mockery of all those who had written him off. Virgil Hill would go on to have the signature victories he sought during a Hall of Fame career of his own, but this wasn’t to be his night.
