Austin 3:16 turns 20.
Twenty years ago today, Stone Cold Steve Austin uttered the famous promo which spawned Austin 3:16.
He had just beaten Jake “The Snake” Roberts in the finals of the 1996 King Of The Ring tournament. Doc Hendricks, aka Michael PS Hayes, had the microphone, didn’t even really ask a question, and then didn’t get to talk for the rest of the time. He just made funny facial expressions.
You sit there and you thump your bible. And you say your prayers. And it didn’t get you anywhere. Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16. Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!
That’s the memorable part of the promo. It became the catchphrase of all catchphrases, igniting WWE’s merchandise business which has been unparalleled since.
But just as important as the catchphrase was the end of the promo. He basically said that he doesn’t care who is the champion because his time is now and he’s coming for the belt. He wasn’t lying.
