With Miguel Cotto signing on with Roc Nation sports, it’s fit to feature our Throwback Thursday around one of boxing’s greatest revenge stories.
Earlier today, it was reported that Cotto had signed with Roc Nation, hoping to fight in June. Will he face Gennady Golovkin? Probably not yet, but we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

But it reminded me of one of boxing’s great revenge stories; the second Cotto vs Margarito fight. After Margarito lost to Shane Mosley, it was determined that he had tainted hand wraps. Cotto fully believes that Margarito’s hand wraps were also tainted in their first fight, in which Margarito stopped him in the 11th round in 2008.
With the loss, Cotto possibly lost a fight with Oscar De La Hoya, that would’ve been the biggest money fight of his career. And it led some discontent in his corner and changes were made. He would go on to win fights at both welterweight and light middleweight losing only to Manny Pacquiao before his second fight with Margarito.
After losing to Mosley, Margarito won one fight before also losing to Manny Pacquiao at Cowboys Stadium. That led up to their rematch.
Many will remember the great Face Off video with Max Kellerman, where Margarito comes off as one of the nastiest guys ever. You feel true sympathy for Cotto.
Cotto wore him out with his movement and closed Margarito’s eye in the process. Revenge was sweet for Miguel Cotto.
