I bring to you, the first ever Fight Game Blog Awards. Since our website is unique in that we cover boxing, pro wrestling, and MMA, we have three different categories for awards.
In addition to our FGB brothers, Stevie J from Angry Marks is also giving his picks.
Pro Wrestling
Wrestler Of The Year Big D - Edge Alan - Shingo Takagi
Was given the ball in Dragon Gate due to top star CIMA being on the sidelines, and the company had it’s best business year ever. He was also outstanding in the ring and is full of charisma.
Duan - Jeff Hardy
This may not be a popular choice, but Jeff has really delivered main event quality matches this year, and he has now finally been given the chance to carry a world title. His ascension has helped freshen up a tired WWE main event scene, and the title change was executed perfectly.
Stevie J - Chris Jericho GG - Chris Jericho
I might’ve given up on WWE this summer if it weren’t for Chris Jericho. He and Shawn Michaels were the sole reason I bought any B shows this year.
Jeff Hardy won the WWE championship in what Meltzer described as a hell of a booked finish. HHH had Edge pinned until Hardy hit the swanton onto HHH and then pinned Edge to finish the PPV.
John Cena beat Chris Jericho to keep the World Heavyweight title and Batista beat Randy Orton to continue their program.
(I’m on the west coast, so this play by play is a bit delayed)
Why, after all these years, are they bringing back the Slammy’s? Well, they need three hours of TV to fill tonight. Why after 5 years away am I blogging Raw again? Eh, I don’t know. I think I just have a heart for nostalgia and while this show won’t be as wacky as the old Slammy’s stuff, I think it will still be fun.
But probably not as fun as this.
For some reason, we have three huge matches that completely overshadow anything that WWE will try and make you pay for this weekend at Armageddon. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll get any clean finishes though.
Maria and Festus (with a tie over his overalls) present the tag team of the year award.
Nominees: Carlito & Primo, Team Priceless, Miz & Morrison, and Cryme Tyme
If Miz & Morrison don’t win, it’s a travesty. And thankfully, they win. Morrison thanks Chuck Norris while Miz thanks Baba Booey.
1. John Morrison vs. CM Punk
This match is one of the semi-finals of the Intercontinental contender tournament. Punk did a cross body to the floor, but Morrison didn’t catch him very well.
This year’s Survivor Series was not a well received show. I actually thought it was ok, but my FGB brothers hated it.
Let’s get to the feedback.
Big D
Show overall rating: Thumbs down
Best Match: Team Batista vs. Team Orton
Worst Fight: RAW Divas vs. SMACKDOWN Divas
Overall, the show was definitely NOT worth 40 or 50 dollars and is nowhere near as epic as it should’ve been considering it was Survivor Series, WWE’s second oldest PPV tradition. You saw some decent wrestling and there were virtually ZERO backstage vignettes and one or two promos here and there, but mainly lots of in-ring action. The issue is, one great, awesome moment was not enough to warrant a purchase that big in these economic times. Honestly, the PPV was BORING for the most part…
But who cares because EDGE IS BACK! THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS NOW!!!
Survivor Series is in Boston and guess who is coming back? Yep, John Cena. I bet he still gets booed.
Remember when this show was the Thanksgiving tradition? I remember watching this on Thanksgiving and then they moved it to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (Hogan vs. Undertaker). The first Survivor Series show was in 1987. My friend Young Randall says he bought the show in 1990 because he remembers Ted DiBiase introducing the Undertaker.
Chris Jericho says that not every story has a happy ending. John Cena’s story is always happy. Until he gets booed.
Good ol’ JR says that CNN reported that Jeff Hardy was found unconscious. He had me for a second until he said he wasn’t sure if Hardy was going to wrestle tonight or not. It sounds like this is a way to get Edge back involved.
1. Shawn Michaels, Cryme Tyme, The Great Khali, and Rey Mysterio vs. JBL, MVP, The Miz, John Morrison, and Kane
Traditional Survivor Series rules here.
MVP yakuza kicked JTG and got the pin.
The Great Khali chopped MVP and then pinned him immediately after. And then he kissed a fat chick. Ok, that’s not until later.
The big news is that Batista is the new World Champion after defeating Chris Jericho as Stone Cold Steve Austin was voted in as special guest referee. That’s an unnecessary title change, but oh well.
HHH wrestled Jeff Hardy, even though they tried hard to influence the fans to make it a three way with Koslov. HHH pinned Hardy again in the middle of the ring.
I wouldn’t usually blog about Raw or Smackdown, but this is the biggest Raw or Smackdown show in a very long time. They’ve done a great job publicizing the event, and you could say they’ve done a better job than promoting the PPV. There are many champion versus champion matches.
But it looks like we’re opening up with an 8 man tag.
1. Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Fit Finlay, and Batista vs. MVP, JBL, The Brian Kendrick, and Kane
I’m already tired of Gregory Helms’ “I’m just saying,” gimmick by the way.
Let’s hope there’s a lot of MVP and Kendrick for the heel side.
The match wasn’t as exciting as I thought it’d be and it was really long. But the last two minutes were great. Rey Rey made the hot tag to Jeff which lead to everyone getting in the ring and kicking each other out of the ring. Rey hit MVP with the 619 and Jeff hit the swanton for the pin.
Winner: Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Fit Finlay, and Batista
News and notes from MMA, boxing, and pro wrestling …
- Jeff Hardy wasn’t allowed to board a flight back to his hometown after Tuesday’s Smackdown tapings because he was intoxicated. I guess it’s a lesser of possible evils from him, but it’s just mind boggling how he keeps screwing up right after WWE forgives him from his previous mistake. For those that don’t remember, he was going to win the ladder match at this year’s Wrestlemania which would’ve given him another title chance, and possible title run sometime this summer. But he failed another drug test and was suspended. He’s scheduled to be in the Smackdown main event at the upcoming No Mercy PPV. He’s even on the poster. Let’s hope this dude gets his act together because in the ring, he’s a great entertainer.
- Kazuo Masaki defeated Joe Riggs last night in the main event of Strikeforce at the Mansion II, their second Playboy Mansion show in two years. Lightweight Mitsuhiro Ishida, the first man to beat Gilbert Melendez, won in the first two minutes, beating Justin Wilcox with an arm bar. Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson defeated Ashe Bowman, which could set up a rematch with Melendez somewhere down the line.
Save for SummerSlam, which I always buy, I wouldn’t have bought the past few WWE PPVs if not for the Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho feud. It’s been one of the best things I’ve seen in wrestling in years, and because of it, I’ve wanted to see everything. It’s very similar to the Randy Orton vs. Mick Foley feud from several years ago in that it hasn’t been the main event feud, but it’s been the must see feud. I couldn’t care less about Batista vs. JBL vs. Kane vs. CM Punk, or any mix of the “top” guys. And even though I hated the way Jericho won the World Belt earlier this month, at least with him on top now, their feud can be at the forefront like it deserves. And with their recently announced ladder match at No Mercy, it look like I’m buying another WWE PPV.
Triple H is also defending against Jeff Hardy. While it’s going to be a good match, I have to wonder how Triple H will treat him. If Edge made Smackdown over the summer, Triple H is literally killing it this fall. The show has become his play toy with his insider remarks, his burial of his challengers, and just his general malaise. He’s tired and bored. You’d think that it’d be in him to make someone right now and that guy could be Jeff Hardy. I think Hardy needs to win the belt to freshen up that brand, but I’d bet against it. I’m not sure they’re comfortable giving Hardy the championship considering that he’s failed them before with drug test failures, but also, I’m not sure Triple H thinks Hardy is at his level. If it were Orton, Michaels, Undertaker, or Batista, I don’t think he’d have a problem dropping the title. I’m just not sure he will to Jeff Hardy.
As it is, WWE has me with at least one more PPV this year (I’ll probably get Survivor Series) and I’m excited to see Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho have a match of the year candidate.
Here’s the YouTube version of a Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels ladder match from many years ago.
To a lesser extent, having the ability to purchase the show in HD was also a buying factor. We don’t even get Raw or Smackdown in HD out here in Gilroy, CA. Charter needs to work on their HD signal as I’m seeing a bit of pixelation.
1. ECW Championship Scramble
Matt Hardy and the Miz started out the match. No pinfalls, but the Miz did hit his finisher for a two count.
Chavo came out next, hit the frog splash on Matt Hardy and is the in match champion.
Hardy hit the side effect and pinned Chavo and is the in match champion. Mark Henry is in next.
Henry hit the world’s strongest slam on Chavo and pinned him and is the new in match champion. Finlay is the last guy in.
Finlay pinned Hardy, but then Hardy pinned The Miz. Hardy is the current in match champion. The Miz has a nasty cut and is bleeding pretty badly.
Hardy played keep away for about 3 minutes, which didn’t really make sense because the rules state that you can pin anyone an win the belt. But Hardy is the new ECW Champion. Henry lost the belt without having been pinned.
