After such a great PPV last month, this one doesn’t look so hot. They’ve cooled off Brock Lesnar considerably and now, Johnny Ace is in the main event and John Cena is right back in the ring. The product is so cold, but as shown by Rock and Lesnar, can have hot moments. But they spend so much time trying to cool off those hot moments. It’s pretty laughable.

1. Jobber Battle Royal for a shot at the IC or US title

Okay, not all of these guys were jobbers. The returning Christian, Miz, and William Regal were in the match. I saw Tyson Kidd in there. The final three came down to Christian, Miz, and David Otunga. After eliminating Otunga, it came down to Christian and Miz and the ending was pretty predictable. Miz thought he won, but he didn’t, and Christian eliminated him.

Winner: Christian

Christian chose Santino.

2. Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger vs. Kofi Kingston and R-Truth

How do Ziggler and Swagger not have an official team name?

It was a very old school and traditional tag match psychology with tremendous athleticism. All four guys did a great job. Swagger and Ziggler had the heat on Truth forever. Hot tag to Kofi and all the high spots followed. Ziggler hit the Zig Zag and Truth broke it up. Truth did a dive over the top rope and Miz didn’t catch him. Just kidding. Ziggler ran towards Kofi and ate a Trouble In Paradise.

Winner: Kofi Kingston and R-Truth

3. Beth Phoenix vs. Layla

Layla actually won the match. Beth worked on her knee for a lot of the match. They did the roll-up spot to make you think Layla would get luck with the win, but Beth kicked out. Then, Layla stuck a neck breaker and pinned her.

Winner: Layla

4. Alberto Del Rio vs. Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton vs. Sheamus

As you would expect, the match was chaotic, but well planned out, especially for the last five minutes. There was a chance where I thought Jericho was actually going to win the match near the end as he had Sheamus rolled up. Orton hit the RKO on everyone and even did the DDT from the second rope on both Alberto and Ricardo. But then Sheamus gave him the Brogue Kick. Jericho hit the Code Breaker on nearly everyone as well. After Jericho got a two-count, Sheamus grabbed him for the White Noise (stupid name) and got the three count.

Winner: Sheamus

Christian changed his mind and wants Cody tonight.

5. The Miz vs. Brodus Clay

Miz is pulling double duty. Miz came out dancing to his theme song with Thriller choreography.

Match was longer than probably all Brodus matches, but he won the way he always wins, with the big splash.

Winner: Brodus Clay

6. Christian vs. Cody Rhodes

There wasn’t a lot of buzz into seeing Christian twice. He beat Rhodes to win the IC strap in a pretty good match with the Killswitch. The best spot of the match was Cody’s sweet moonsault.

Winner: Christian

7. Daniel Bryan vs. CM Punk

This was really excellent. Great psychology. Great athleticism. Back and forth match where both guys got over and the guy who lost was over a ton. Punk targeted Bryan’s kicking knee. Bryan continued to target Punk’s ribs from his Smackdown injury. The best spot early on was a Surfboard maneuver in which Bryan was shouting “Yes!” as he rocked back and forth. Punk hit the Randy Savage savage elbow after Bryan hit the headbutt from the top. They were playing a game of top this. At the finish, Bryan finally got the Yes Lock on Punk and rocked back on it, but his shoulders were down. The ref counted three and one second later, Punk tapped. Bryan thought he won.

Winner: CM Punk

8. Camacho vs. Ryback

Yawn.

Winner: Ryback

9. John Laurinaitis vs. John Cena

Cena goofed around with Johnny Ace for the entire match which was reminiscent of whenever Steve Austin would work with Vince McMahon. Ace got in a few chair shots. He tried running to the back, but was cut off by The Big Show, who was fired on Monday. Show threw Ace into Cena for the FU and then Show blasted Cena with a right hand and Ace got the pin.

Winner: John Laurinaitis

Based on storytelling, it was the right move. But now we have to see more Cena/Show matches?

Chris Saunders talks about his troubled childhood and he and Andy Ogle bond. Dominick Cruz thinks the key to the fight is Vinc Pichel taking Saunders down and maybe submitting him.

Vinc Pichel vs. Chris Saunders

Fun first round with both guys showing how evenly matched they are. Pichel was working for a take down against the cage and Saunders reversed the position, got the take down, but nearly ended up on the bottom. The rest of the round was a battle for position with Pichel getting the better of Saunders with inside striking.

Pichel most definitely won the second. Saunders was the one fighting better on the inside, getting his back, but not being able to take him down. Pichel was landing knees to the abdomen. Saunders was getting tired trying to hold on and let him go. Pichel immediately tagged him and it looked like it could be over. But Saunders fought back, but still lost the round.

Winner: Vinc Pichel by way of majority decision

Andy Ogle says it’s his time. Urijah Faber says Iaquinta doesn’t let on what he’s thinking.

Andy Ogle vs. Al Iaquinta

These guys came to throw hands. Ogle was having trouble keeping Iaquinta off him, but was holding his own with strikes. Iaquinta just kept stalking him though and was starting to land bigger shots. He put Ogle down and looked like he was trying to get his back, but they were back on their feet. Iaquinta used his left hand to hold Ogle’s head and just laid him out with an elbow. Nasty shot.

Winner: Al Iaquinta by way of 1st round TKO

The semis are going to be James Vick vs. Michael Chiesa and Vinc Pichel vs. Al Iaquinta.

Dana White announced that Urijah Faber would face Renan Barao. Dominick Cruz looked heartbroken.

Manny Pacquiao has brought attention to boxing yet again, but this time, I’m not sure it’s the way he intended. He recently made headlines with his opinion on President Barrack Obama’s support of gay marriage.

It was this Examiner story that either incorrectly attributed the bible verse Leviticus 20:13 to Pacquaio, or just seemed to attribute it to him based on how it was written.

The author, Granville Ampong, wrote a detailed story that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum discounted because it wasn’t written by an actual boxing journalist. The paragraph that Ampong is getting heat for is below:

Pacquiao’s directive for Obama calls societies to fear God and not to promote sin, inclusive of same-sex marriage and cohabitation, notwithstanding what Leviticus 20:13 has been pointing all along: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Pacquiao has denied the quote, telling the AP that he didn’t say it and Mr. Ampong followed up in a second post that he added the verse, not Pacquiao.

Pacquiao also tried to restate his view, talking to Mario Lopez on Extra.

“To the gay community, I apologize. I’m against same-sex marriage, but I’m not condemning you. My favorite verse is ‘Love one another as you love yourself. Love your neighbor.’ So I love everybody!”

As expected, much of the public who disagree with him have taken him to task for his comments. Many of the comments I’ve read on Facebook and Twitter are more hateful than Pacquiao’s comments. In fact, I don’t find Pacquiao’s statements hateful. I just find them naive. What Manny Pacquiao, a superstar boxer, thinks about Floyd Mayweather or the use of a left hook is interesting to me. What he thinks about gay marriage isn’t interesting to me. However, that’s not how publicity works. Since he’s a public and political figure and celebrity, his opinions mean more to others than most.

Maybe the best thing I’ve read about this is by Laurel Fantauzzo via Grantland. As a gay Filipina American, Fantauzzo talks about her cultural background as it relates to religion. I have several Filipino friends who come from Catholic families. This quote from Fantauzzo is key:

I know, though, that you also don’t want me to be married. I know you think this is a perfectly reasonable, justified stand to take against me. You’re like a lot of Filipinos: Catholic. Powerfully, post-colonially Catholic. Catholic na Catholic.

And this:

When you grow up Filipina — or Italiapina, as I did — your parents give you Catholicism as a kind of heavy gift. A centuries-old guide for every life transition a human can go through. Birth, death, the burden of any wrongdoing, and, yes, marriage. But as I grew older and realized the dreaded word applied to me — lesbian — I realized the Church was what I’d have to feint and duck; the Church’s cruel, untrue dictates about me were what I’d have to dance with and defeat.

This comes from years and years of family and culture. Pacquiao hasn’t just decided that he’s against gay marriage. It’s been ingrained in him since he was a child. Even though I believe in equality and think gay couples should have the same rights as straight couples, I also don’t feel the need to bash Manny Pacquiao for having a different opinion on the subject than me. Maybe I’m more educated on the issue. Maybe he’s more educated on the issue. But because we disagree doesn’t make him a bad person, which is what I fear those who disagree with him are labeling him as.

Use his statements as a way to enlighten others if you feel the need to. But I’m not going to condone his comments simply because they’re different than mine. Maybe one day, our vision will be similar.

In his latest video blog, Dana White plays defense about the UFC’s disappointing rating for their latest UFC on Fox show. He breaks down the demographics in an interesting way, using median age to basically say that they beat certain TV shows that they didn’t. They may have won in their demos, which is good for them, but it doesn’t mean they won their time slot. He cuts down Dave Meltzer something fierce, which was sort of uncalled for, but you could tell White was upset. He talks about beating the NBA Playoffs, which more so says something about how uninteresting the San Antonio Spurs vs. Utah Jazz series was to fans than it does anything for the UFC show. A special UFC show should beat a sweep elimination game in the NBA Playoffs featuring no stars.

White can play defense and has a right to be able to stick up for his company, but the fact of the matter is, he put a low level card on broadcast television and the fans didn’t tune like they did for the first two cards. Notice that he never mentioned the Mayweather/Cotto fight.

Here’s the video:

Edit:
On the forum on Meltzer’s website, he mentioned that Dana called him and told him what he was going to do and said all he cares about is if the story was fair and wasn’t mad at Dana in the least bit.

Dana White showed up at the training facility and told both teams to meet at the bleachers. Dana says that Cruz blew his knee out and tore his ACL. White says Cruz will be out 9 months. He tells Faber that he’ll have a fight for him scheduled for next week. It sounds like it may be Michael McDonald.

Dana says Cruz will stay and coach his team. Cruz says he hopes Faber wins so he can whip him when he’s better. Faber says that he’s starting the rumor that Ronda Rousey tore Cruz’s knee.

James Vick vs. Joe Proctor

Vick is so long and he’s able to hit Proctor in the face all while not being hit. He bloodied Proctor’s face early on, but he also has a bloody nose. So he got hit as well.

Proctor got a takedown, but Vick quickly got up. Proctor tried a choke, but Vick was able to get him down and landed on top of him. Vick’s using his kicks to keep the distance, but Proctor has been able to decrease the distance better in this round.

Winner: James Vick by unanimous decision

I think I would’ve given Proctor the second round for sure and thought there should’ve been a third round.

Justin Lawrence vs. Michael Chiesa

Fast paced first round that was mostly on the ground, surprisingly. For whatever reason, Lawrence stayed on the ground with him and Chiesa was just destroying him off his back. He was going for a Kimura and nearly had a triangle when the round ended. While he didn’t have the triangle, he was nailing Lawrence’s head with elbows.

Like the opposite of the first round, this one was nearly all on the feet. Chiesa couldn’t get it to the ground. Lawrence threw two shots to the body and Chiesa went down, which suckered Lawrence to go to the ground and Chiesa nearly tore his shoulder off with a Kimura. Lawrence stayed on top of him surprisingly. Cruz didn’t want him there.

They’re going to a third round. I had Chiesa winning the first and Lawrence the second. They were on the mat and Lawrence was tired. Chiesa reversed him easily and Lawrence pretty much gave up on the bottom from exhaustion. Chiesa hit him a few times and the referee stopped it.

Winner: Michael Chiesa by way of 3rd round TKO

Dana White has next week’s fights as Vinc Pichel vs. Chris Saunders and Al Iaquinta vs. Andy Ogle.

Sam Sicilia took his loss hard as expected. Chris Saunders was the last pick and not expected to win, but he did.

In the coach’s challenge, they’re testing their marksmanship. They have to do an obstacle course which includes shooting pistols, rifles, machine guns, and a grenade launcher. This is nuts. This year, the coaches get $20,000 in cash and the team members each get $1500.

Cruz shot up the rope climb first and then hit all his targets with the pistol. He beat Faber through the turning over of the tire. Cruz shot through the rifle targets, carried the dummy quickly, and then went to the machine gun first. He was struggling with the second target and Faber caught him. They had to carry ammunition back and forth before getting to the grenade launcher stage. Faber got his first target and then Cruz hit his. Faber hit his second target to win the competition. Team Faber wins.

Ogle says that he has a big heart and Rio will have to kill him to beat him. Rio says he wants fight of the night. Wait, this isn’t a main UFC card fight.

Dana White brought Faber and Cruz together to help put the quarterfinals fights together. Faber is grating on Cruz’s nerves.

Andy Ogle vs. Mike Rio

Ogle moving around the cage, landing punches one at a time. He wasn’t really sitting on his punches and wasn’t throwing combinations. Rio took him down quickly and easily, but then it went back to Ogle’s one-punch shots.

In the second round, it was more of the same until Rio took him to the ground, but Ogle had the better position. Rio had Ogle’s back, but couldn’t do anything with it and was being pounded on until he gave up his neck and Ogle sunk in a rear naked choke to submit him.

Winner: Andy Ogle by way of 2nd round submission

Dana White gave two quarterfinal fights for the next show. It’s going to be James Vick vs. Joe Proctor and Justin Lawrence vs. Michael Chiesa.
