Check out 24/7: Canelo/Golovkin Episode 1.
If Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor was the event of the year, then this is definitely the fight of the year. The UFC hasn’t had a stellar year inside the octagon and not matter how much Mayweather and McGregor wanted you to believe it was a competitive contest, Mayweather stopped sparring a month out and had little trouble with McGregor. So this has to be it.
The promotion of Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin has been hurt in part because Mayweather and McGregor beat them to the punch in getting their date out first, after Oscar De La Hoya secured the popular mid-September date. Who knows how many casual fan eyeballs they lost to the spectacle?
McGregor and Mayweather’s entire promotion was based on each other’s dislike for each other. In this case, it’s the opposite. Canelo and Golovkin definitely have a competitive respect for each other. Neither guy flashed their money or expensive cars. They talked about family, their upbringing, and their love for boxing. It’s the exact opposite of the other promotion.
That other promotion broke records, so I don’t know if doing the opposite is going to bring the most awareness to this fight, but viewers will feel cleaner about it at the end.
Canelo seems to have a chip on his shoulder because people thinks he was ducking Golovkin. Gennady seems to be bothered that his US career got such a late start. But outside of that, these guys are pretty positive guys, and aren’t trying to create fake dislike for each other to fool the fans.
Episode one was a simple introduction to the big fight. They’ll need to dial it up a bit for episode two.
