Check out our latest Throwback Thursday video featuring Roberto Duran vs Pipino Cuevas.
After losing to Sugar Ray Leonard in the “No Mas” fight, Roberto Duran found himself at a crossroads. After being away from the ring for nine months, he took two quick fights, winning them both in unsatisfying fashion.
He went up in weight to challenge for Wilfred Benitez’s WBC light middleweight title, but lost. He also lost to Kirkland Laing in Ring Magazine’s upset of the year for 1982. His promoter, Don King, was done with him. But then he won three straight bouts, leading to him winning the WBA version of the light middleweight title from Davey Moore.
It was his fight with Pipino Cuevas which made people believers in Duran again. He used precision and power to knock out the super tough Cuevas, who had lost over 2 years earlier to Thomas Hearns in similar fashion.
Beating Cuevas and then Moore would set Duran up to face Marvelous Marvin Hagler, the next bout we’ll cover in the Fabulous Four podcast.
