Duan and GG introduce a new podcast project centered on the era of four great champions.
The Fabulous Four or Fab Four or Four Kings, or whatever you’d like to call them created an era in boxing that fans remember with great clarity. It was a post-Ali era where welterweights and then middleweights reigned supreme both in the ring and in their bank accounts.
The Fabulous Four Podcast project will focus on every fight between Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. We’re going deep into detail from the landscape at the time all the way through the contest and aftermath.
We’ll post episodes roughly once a month and do so throughout the rest of the year.
The subject of our first podcast is also known as The Brawl In Montreal. On June 20, 1980 at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Olympic gold medalist and WBC welterweight champion Sugar Ray Leonard faced off against former lightweight champion, Roberto Duran.
Duan sets the landscape in the post-Ali era and gives a bio on Duran. I give a bio on Leonard. We then go into heavy detail on the fight, describing it like only two people watching it with hindsight 35 years later can. We then lead into the second fight, which will be the subject of our second podcast.
