Published by GG under Audio,Mixed Martial Arts,UFC

Jason, aka @dadrrtywhyteboi and I are back to talk about the aftermath of UFC 137 in the latest edition of FGB Radio.

We discuss the very newsworthy UFC 137, including the new main event for the Super Bowl weekend show, BJ Penn’s retirement announcement and whether or not we think he’ll retire and also what he means historically, as well as Cro Cop’s retirement and how he went out (fought his ass off).

Check it out and let us know what you think.

Will BJ Penn And Mirko Cro Cop Really Retire?

Published by GG under Mixed Martial Arts,News,UFC

At UFC 137, both Mirko Cro Cop and BJ Penn announced that they did not want to continue fighting anymore. Will both guys stay retired? Cro Cop seemed to be genuine while Penn seemed to be more depressed at his performance than anything else.

If either retires, talk about a historic night even if UFC 137 wasn’t a fantastic show.

UFC 137 Play By Play – BJ Penn Vs. Nick Diaz

Earlier in the evening on the Spike TV prelims, Bart Palaszewski knocked out Tyson Griffin in the first round and Donald Cerrone submitted Dennis Siver in the first as well.

1. Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop

Close first round. Roop won the stand-up battle, but Hioki got a takedown and ended up on top. It’s arguable that Roop did more from the bottom than Hioki did on top.

Hioki won that round. He got a takedown and fell into mount and was pretty much in mount the entire round. He locked his feet around and underneath Roop’s and he couldn’t do anything. Hioki didn’t hurt him though. He ate an upkick at the end of the round.

Not a good way to start the show unless you’re a die-hard ground fan. Roop won the round with ground control. Whoever wins the fight will depend on who won the first round.

Winner: Hatsu Hioki by split decision

2. Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen

I didn’t get to score it round by round, but Jorgensen had the upper hand for most of the fight in a technical battle. This wasn’t necessarily the kind of fight to jumpstart the crowd, but it was a nice little back and forth battle.

Winner: Scott Jorgensen by way of unanimous decision

UFC 137 Preview – BJ Penn Vs. Nick Diaz

Published by GG under Mixed Martial Arts,Preview,UFC

UFC 137 is a much different show than it started out as. Originally, Georges St. Pierre was scheduled to defend his UFC welterweight title against former Strikeforce welterweight champion, Nick Diaz. Diaz was pulled out of the fight because he missed two straight media appearances with GSP to hype the fight. The main event was switched to GSP defending against Carlos Condit, while Diaz was given BJ Penn, who was originally supposed to fight Condit. Soon after, GSP was injured and the Condit fight was off. BJ Penn vs. Nick Diaz is now the main event.

The FGB crew along with friend of the site JP and Stevie J from Angrymarks, have predictions for the main event as well as Mirko Cro Cop vs. Roy Nelson.

Mirko Cro Cop vs. Roy Nelson

Duan: Nelson by 3rd round TKO
Alan: Cro Cop by decision
Stevie: Nelson by 1st round TKO
JP: Nelson by 2nd round TKO
Cactus Jim: Nelson by 2nd round TKO
GG: Nelson by 2nd round TKO

Duan says:

Crocop is something beyond a shell of his former self at this stage. The once feared kick boxing God has now suffered consecutive knockout defeats to Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub in his last two fights. If that isn’t evidence that the retirement home is beckoning, I just don’t know what is.

Nelson, if nothing else, has proved that he’s durable during his UFC tenure. Dos Santos couldn’t put him away, so I’m confident he’s capable of answering whatever Mirko throws his way. He might fall behind on the cards to the better technician, but at some point he will find the mark with one of those big bombs and that will be that.

Alan says:

I don’t think Mirko is as bad as people think he is. It’s more a case of knowing where he once was and seeing how far he’s fallen, may cause people to think inaccurately about what he’s like right now. He’s still handy enough, and can hang in there for a couple of rounds with mid level heavyweights. On occasions, he may beat some (Pat Barry). That said, he’s still very susceptible to getting a whipping if his opponent is on his absolute A game. Will this be the case with Roy Nelson? I don’t know. A year ago, I’d have said Roy would blitz through him but from all accounts, he’s not appearing very motivated for this. If he’s lacklustre here, Mirko might just find a way to out point him. In fact I’ve talked myself into the upset pick.
