WrestleMania Mount Rushmore
Former WWE writer, David Lagana, has come up with his Mount Rushmore of WrestleMania list and has asked fans to post theirs.
I have two different lists. The first list is based on match quality. The crew at this website put together a list of WrestleMania’s 25 greatest matches, and out of those matches, I calculated which four guys came in the most in those matches and that will be the first list.
You can read the first two lists which have already been published. Our top five will be published on Tuesday morning.
WrestleMania’s greatest matches: 25-16
WrestleMania’s greatest matches: 15-6
The second list, and I think this is what Lagana is really getting at, is based on star power and who delivered those WrestleMania moments most. That is a less calculated list and simply based on my memories.
Lagana’s list is Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Hulk Hogan, and Shawn Michaels.
Workers’ List:
1. Shawn Michaels (in 7 of the top 25 greatest WrestleMania matches)
2. The Undertaker (in 4 of the top 25 greatest WrestleMania matches)
3. Edge (in 4 of the top 25 greatest WrestleMania matches)
4. Kurt Angle (in 3 of the top 25 greatest WrestleMania matches)
Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chris Benoit, Rock, and Randy Savage all had 3 matches each in the top 25 of the greatest WrestleMania matches ever, but what pushed Kurt onto the list is that his 3 were in the top 15 of our list.
Star List:
1. Shawn Michaels
2. The Undertaker
3. Hulk Hogan
4. Stone Cold Steve Austin
I really thought about adding either Rock or Savage above Austin on the list, but Austin was at his peak when WrestleMania became special again, so he gets the duke. If Bret Hart never went to WCW, I have a feeling he’d be right up there with Shawn Michaels. As it was, Hart had two classic WrestleMania matches, and one that people like to remember as classic, but I thought was good and time has overrated it (Bret vs. Shawn).
There’s my Mount Rushmore. You can also follow Lagana on Twitter at both @Lagana and @IWantWrestling.
I watched the 50 greatest Superstars of Wrestling over the weekend and they had Hulk in the mid-20′s. I found this to be a grave injustice.
That entire list was a political minefield. A lot of those rankings, Hogan included, were put together to take shots at guys no longer with the company.
I haven’t seen it yet, but will probably see it at some point. I’m loving the Netflix streaming.
It’s pretty similar the same reason Frank Shamrock was left off the UFC Top 100 Fights DVD.
The host kept saying that the list was compiled by current superstars. I wonder how much truth there is to that.
I must say, they did right by my childhood favorite Rey Mysterio, putting him top ten.
From what I understand, there were definitely people who helped put the list together, but the order was determined by Vince McMahon.
