An old friend returns to FGB Radio to talk about the Royal Rumble.
We talk about Rumble matches of the past, what we think of the build for this one, and who we think will win.
We also chat about what WWE can do for WrestleMania (or won’t do), and then quickly give our thoughts on the latest in Strikeforce, including thoughts on the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
HHH was number 29, and we all figured that he was going to win the match. And all of a sudden, John Cena, who wasn’t even supposed to be healthy, was number 30 and blew the roof off the house.
There was a fun little Mick Foley/HHH spot in the match too.
We are now only a matter of days away from the first big fight of the year where undefeated champions Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander will face off in a light welterweight title unification match.
The folks at Gorilla Productions have put together another incredible video package highlighting some of the big fights in store for us in 2011. I’m sure I have said it before, but GP are the very best at this.
This is the third UFC Fight For The Troops, following Vince McMahon’s lead. Even though there aren’t really any marquee matches on the card, there are some possible fun fights on this card, including the main event.
“Handsome” Matt Wiman and Cole Miller, former housemates on The Ultimate Fighter, face-off in the first fight of the night.
1. Matt Wiman vs. Cole Miller
This was a pretty tough round for the show. Miller was using his knees from the clinch, while Wiman was strong with uppercuts on the inside. Miller may have lost the round by throwing a knee that missed and then he tried to pull guard after throwing the knee, pulling Wiman down with him. Only, he whiffed and was on his back. He was aggressive with submission attempts on the bottom, but Wiman took the last 30 seconds with some nice ground and pound.
Wiman clearly won the second round. Miller couldn’t keep him off him and he spent most of the round just pounding him from the top.
Wiman put it on him in the third round. His strikes were varied with punches and kicks and he was the aggressor the entire fight. He dominated him from the top again and Miller just had nothing.
Winner: Matt Wiman by way of unanimous decision
One of the judges game Miller the first round.
2. Joey Beltran vs. Pat Barry
The round didn’t really get started. Barry was pretty strategic. He didn’t open up and let his feet go. He landed a few hard kicks to Beltran’s legs and that caused Beltran to fight scared. Beltran did have a nice little flurry, but Barry wasn’t bothered by it. Beltran also hit him low a couple times. Continue Reading »
“We are in the heart of our training camp. I’m here in Las Vegas sleeping in Mike Tyson’s old bed in Don King’s house at night, pounding the pavement for six miles every morning and in the gym every afternoon for training and sparring.
“You can’t beat a fight town like Vegas to find good sparring partners. It is critical for my preparation. I have guys here who are not just giving me good rounds, they are giving me good looks-the kind of looks I expect to see from Tim Bradley come Jan. 29 at the Silverdome.
“A daunting challenge is when we drive up to Mt. Charleston three times a week to run on the mountain road I call The Monster. It’s one thing to run it in the summer. It’s quite another to face it in the dead of winter.
“I had a TV crew from HBO up there with me on The Monster last week, and we got snowed off the mountain! We are up so high I’m jogging by people who are skiing at the Mt. Charleston Ski Resort. Heck, it snowed two inches in Vegas the other day! So much for fun in the sun….
“My trainer, Kevin Cunningham, has been with me since I was 7. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. He is an excellent trainer. His goal is to make sure I peak on the night of the fight. We are moving towards that goal every day. I feel like that is exactly where we will be come fight night.
“I can tell you one thing for sure: Timmy Bradley is going to have to deal with what I am preparing for. This isn’t a hobby for me, it’s my job. Bradley is not going to come to Detroit at the end of this month and take what I have worked my whole life to gain.
“He will have to deal with what I am going to bring. I know he’s trying to boast himself up, trying to convince himself of all the things he’s going to do. Well, I remember something Felix Trinidad said when Fernando Vargas was doing a lot of bragging before they fought. He said there is an old Puerto Rican saying that goes like this: ‘It is one thing to call out the devil, and it is quite another to see him coming.’ You’ll see what happens to Timmy Bradley when he sees me coming.”
