Aftermath: Survivor Series 2009
WWE presented their annual Survivor Series event last Sunday, traditionally highlighted by multi-man elimination tag matches. This year, we got three of those, plus one grudge match and two championship threeways. Was it any good?
Big D:
Thumbs Up.
Best Match: Team Orton vs. Team Kofi
Worst Match: Batista vs. Rey Mysterio
While the title matches were decent and the Batista/Rey match was simply an angle to get Rey off of TV and establish Dave as a relentless monster, it was the 5 on 5 Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Matches that made the show and more importantly – established new stars. Since the onset of the concept in 1987 with Bam Bam Bigelow battling Andre the Giant on his own in an effort to make him a big star (this was before he jobbed to a football player), WWE has used this event to introduce as well as catapult new stars. Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Kofi Kingston were all made huge here. Kofi Kingston got a pin over two former World Champions and they established a future CM Punk vs. Christian program.
Overall, a pretty fun show!
Duan:
Thumbs Up but not all the way
Best Match: Either of the traditional Survivor Series matches
Worst Match: Taker/Show/Jericho (I skipped the diva’s match)
I was really enjoying this show up to a point, but it lost me during the first world title match.
GG:
Thumbs Up
Best Match: John Cena vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels
Worst Match: Team Mickie vs. Team McCool
If you take away the last hour of this show, WWE looks like a company willing to push young guys with a clear understanding in how to make a future star. If you watch the last hour of this show only, WWE looks like a company that is holding onto their past, unwilling to push anyone other than the tippity top guys who are all stale as week old bread.
Thus, Survivor Series was a tale of two shows. I loved the first two hours. Kofi winning was excellent and necessary. Is Randy Orton knocked down at all? Nope. Also, I figured that Sheamus and Drew McIntyre were going to survive, but I’m glad the Miz did as well. If I’m picking nits, McIntyre should’ve pinned Morrison since they’re on the same brand and something could be built from it, but oh well.
The two main events were exactly what you’d expect. Undertaker’s match was slow and plodding but at least the finish was ok. And with HBK knocking Triple H out early on, I was all of a sudden into the match. But then Cena was portrayed as a complete goof with the savvy vets even though he’s the champ, and I lost some interest. The last five minutes were fun and creative, though a bit sloppy.
We’ll see ya at WWE’s TLC.
