Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 106
Five Ounces of Pain is reporting that Brock Lesnar will make his next title defense of the UFC Heavyweight Championship of the World against a man whom I feel could be his greatest threat ever – Shane Carwin, at UFC 106.
UFC 106 is scheduled to be one of the biggest cards of the year LIVE on November 21st from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada. The sub-main event for this card will be a battle of UFC legends as the returning Tito Ortiz will battle Mark “The Hammer” Coleman at light-heavyweight.
The original plan was to have Carwin face the other young contender Cain Velasquez in a number one contenders battle at UFC 104 with the winner facing Lesnar. We are unsure as to why this plan was scrapped but if you were to ask me, my theory is that Dana White, the Fertittas, and all of the UFC realize the limitless box office draw that Brock Lesnar is and want him fighting as often as possible per year. Every time that Brock fights, it equals dollar signs and the UFC recognizes that it is in their best interests to feature him in as many big fights as possible to make the most money.
But is it too soon for Carwin? Some fans would argue yes. The D-2 All-American is undefeated in the UFC with a 4-0 record, and while he has looked like a complete monster against everybody he has faced, even brutally knocking out former title contender Gabriel Gonzaga in his last fight, some feel it’s too early, possibly because this may be a legitimate threat to Lesnar. In my opinion, the 4-0 record should not matter because Brock got a shot at Randy Couture with a 3-1 record going in. No double standard here. I have said for months since first laying eyes on Carwin that he IS the man who has a shot at not only beating Brock, but also annihilating him. He’s large, he’s strong, he’s a great wrestler, AND he is a much more accurate and proficient striker. Brock had better take this fight even MORE seriously than he did Couture or Mir.
Five Ounces also said that they believe that the Octagon will likely need to be reinforced because both giants weigh-in right around the 265 and will probably enter the cage at around 280 or 285.
Their report can be found here.
Please note, I have NOT been able to confirm this through Wrestling Observer, Yahoo, or any of the major MMA publications nor has UFC commented on it just yet. We will update you as we hear more from this alleged amazing announcement.
I’m excited.
Editor’s note: It’s rumored that Velasquez will now face Ben Rothwell at UFC 104.
This is popping up everywhere so it looks legit.
It appears there is a fundamental shift going on inside the UFC in terms of what weight bracket is the biggest draw. Not too long ago the Light Heavyweight division was the most popular featuring mega-stars Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture. Now it seems that has shifted to Heavyweight and the UFC is stockpiling talented young fighters.
Lesnar has a lot to do with it but so does the American publics love of the biggest fighters. This is what I am looking foward to the most: watching a division, that was previously believed to be weak, be flooded with great talent.
Outside of the Lesnar-Carwin fight, which should be nuts, there are several other fights in the next few months that will be showcases for the next stars of the UFC.
At 102 undercard Tuchscherer, Chris Tim Hague and Todd Duffee all fight. Tuchscherer is a Lesnar training partner and lists at 6’2 265. Hague is a 6’4 260 fighter, only 27, with a UFC win over Pat Berry. Duffee is even younger at 23, is reportedly a huge 6’3 260.
Not to mention Gabriel Gonzaga is on the card as well, fighting Tuchscherer.
Then there is TUF 10 which is heavyweights with some good prospects like Big Country, Justin Wren and of course Kimbo. Then at 103 Junior Dos Santos (25) takes on Cro Cop. Then at 104 Ben Rothwell debuts in the UFC against Cain Velasquez and Chase Gormley debuts as well.
Then the Heavyweight invasion is completed at 106 with Lesnar-Carwin. Plus there is Frank Mir still who recently said he is hitting the weights hard to add the needed strength for a rematch with Brock, which he thinks will happen in 2010.
Yep, the heavyweights are looking good.
D and I did a quick audio about this that should be up on the site soon.
JP – Other than the Kimo thing, what have I put up on here that ISN’T legit?
I’m the EMPEROR!
LOL.
That first sentence was meant to assure myself more than anything. I hate getting my hopes up over every internet rumor, but I do it everytime!
I’m glad you guys didn’t see me the week before 101 when the LA TImes reported Fedor was coming to the UFC…I was CRUSHED.
