FGB Radio – 7/29: Tim Starks Talks Vernon Forrest While Big D And I Talk MMA

We’re back with FGB Radio.

I interview Tim Starks to talk about Vernon Forrest’s career. As a bonus, if you listen all the way to the end, I add the second part of our conversation which focused on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight, which also goes head to head with UFC 103.

Then Big D and I talk Affliction, take Twitter questions from the listeners, welcome JP who calls in to talk Fedor, and finish off with talk about SummerSlam.

The show is Twitter interactive, so follow us on Twitter @fightgameblog. You can also follow Big D @EmperorBigD, and Stevie J (who hosts this podcast) @Angrymarks.

    Regarding Kermit Cintron….
The light middleweight division is rather poor at the moment, and it has been recently weakened severely by both the passing of Vernon Forrest and also by the question mark hanging over James Kirkland’s career. With that in mind, there are not a whole lot of huge fights out there for Kermit, but it also means that there is room for someone like him to really establish himself as a top player in the division. The only big name option out there is Paul Williams, and with him division hoping to secure big fights, I don’t think he would be to eager to fight Cintron.

The other most notable option is a rematch with Sergio Martinez. I think Cintron is in line for that fight. I’m fairly sure that the win over Angulo was an eliminator for the WBC title which is held by Martinez. They fought to a draw back early in the year, but to be honest I felt it was a terrible decision. Cintron looked to me like a spent force in that fight, and I though Sergio took it convincingly.

However. I thought Cintron looked like a whole new fighter against Angulo. He looked rejuvenated, and I thought that was probably his career best performance. I’m not sure whether Martinez is a horrible match up for him stylistically or if he just had a bad night back in February. I imagine we will find out before too long anyway.

Regardless of that, Cintron is a good solid junior middleweight, and should stay amongst the top players in the division. And I do think that with the correct match up he could win another title belt. While there may not be a lot of big money fights for him at the minute, there’s definitely the potential for some entertaining match ups. One I would certainly like to see is him against a british fighter named Jamie Moore. I have said it countless times, I think Moore is going to surprise a lot of people with how far he can go when he starts mixing it with the worlds best. Him and Cintron is a fight I could see being made maybe a year or so down the road.
