The Pac-Man Chops Down The Hitman

Published by GG at 11:36 pm under Boxing

During the 24/7 specials, both trainers did their job to build up their fighters in hyping up the fight.

Freddie Roach said that he thought Manny Pacquiao would take out Ricky Hatton in four rounds.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. said that Pacquiao was going to lose because he doesn’t move his head enough and that Ricky was a pure boxer.

One trainer was very right, and one was oh so very wrong.

Manny Pacquiao made Ricky Hatton look like someone who didn’t even deserve to be in the ring with him. He watched as Hatton lunged and attacked like he had shoe string tied around both ankles and just chopped him down like a tree. Hatton lunges with a left hook. Pacquiao hits him with a barrage of three punches that all land. Hatton walks in and tries to stalk Pacquiao and Manny throws two punches that Hatton doesn’t even see. That’s how the entire fight went.

One of the main reasons that Ricky Hatton decided to request the services of one Floyd Mayweather Sr., is because Floyd’s son gave fighters the blueprint on how to beat Ricky Hatton. Wait for Rick to come in and swing wide, and beat him to the punch. Wash, rinse, repeat.

In Hatton’s fight with Paulie Malignaggi, Hatton showed some side to side movement and though he didn’t completely stray from his bread and butter, he looked like a newly energized fighter.

But in this fight, he walked right into Pacquiao’s fists. It was amazing to me to see Hatton’s strategy to simply stalk Pacquiao down and try to bully him. He caught Pacquiao against the ropes once or twice, but wasn’t able to keep him there.

Pacquiao was landing at will near the end of the first round and it looked like Ricky might not last the first round. But the second round wasn’t even as kind as the first.

As we neared the end of the second round, Hatton simply walked into a left hook and was out before he even hit the ground.

During the last 24/7 special, Ricky said that he didn’t want to bring his young son to the fight because at any time in boxing, you could get knocked out, and he’d rather not have his son see that. I don’t want to say that he foreshadowed his own downfall, but I think he knew there was a possibility tonight.

With Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez on the horizon, Manny probably fights the winner. He and Floyd could do super business. I’ll credit this to Tim Starks from The Queensberry Rules. He said that we’d have the guy who retired as boxing’s pound for pound best fighter against the current pound for pound fighter. Who couldn’t market that?
