HBO Boxing – Juan Urango Vs. Andre Berto Play By Play

Published by GG under Boxing, Play by Play

There are two fights tonight and the first is Alfredo Angulo vs. Kermit Cintron. What might be most interesting is that Cintron rehydrated up to 169 while Angulo only hydrated back to 159. Also, it was said that Angulo didn’t come to Florida until the weigh in day, so Cintron had to do all the late media by himself.

Cintron dominated the early part of the fight, using his jab, and more importantly, his decisive speed advantage. Angulo started off slowly and seemingly allowed Cintron to look so good. But Angulo picked it up near the middle rounds and just pressed Cintron. He ate a lot of shots, but was able to make the fight close in my eyes. The 12th round was very good.

Cintron pulled it out 116-112.

Juan Urango vs. Andre Berto

1st Round
Even though Urango is the one coming up in weight, he looks jacked. His back is huge. I hope he passes the medicine test. Berto looked really fast and was using his jab and moving. The commentators (Max Kellerman, Bob Papa, and Lennox Lewis) made mention that Berto was moving right towards Urango’s power hand as a southpaw. They all said he was fast enough to do it, and Kellerman made the observation that Urango is a natural right-hander, thus he’s not necessarily walking into his power shot. First round to Berto.

First Reactions – Rampage/Evans And Shogun/Machida

Published by GG under Mixed Martial Arts, News, UFC

At FGB, we like to collaborate on posts, but one of the issues in collaborating is that everyone’s opinion is so valid and smart, at times, it takes us a long time to get our thoughts together. And with newsworthy items, by the time we think of putting something together, it’s later that we’d like.

So, with some of the more newsworthy items, we’ll do “first reaction” or “quick thoughts” kind of posts.

I decided to ask everyone what they thought about two up and coming UFC light heavyweight battles.

Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans

Cactus Jim: When I first heard Jackson versus Evans I was a little confused and thought maybe Rampage hadn’t been offered the fight with Machida. After I heard that his preference was to fight Evans instead of fight for the title I immediately thought that would be like an American football player coming out of college and having the choice to play for Detroit or Pittsburgh and choosing Detroit. The question I have now is, “Is Jackson avoiding Machida for some reason?” Maybe health, timing, fear, etc. Or does he just want Evans so bad he’d pass up a title spot to get the fight. I doubt that’s the case, because UFC just killed the Rashad/Rampage title fight by having them fight now.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 9: US Vs. UK – Episode 9

With Pierce gone, they’re going to have to bring in a new guy or guy who previously lost to fight. I think this is the last week of the preliminary fights.

It looks like Mark Miller might be the guy. Or toothless Frank Lester.

Pierce lied to his teammates about what Dana told him about fighting. He made it seem like Dana didn’t let him to fight because of his leg.

Lester was cleared to fight, but Miller wasn’t because of his broken nose. Lester is a huge welterweight.

Dan Henderson says that his team has been doing the early practice the entire time and wants to change so that his team gets the later practice and can sleep in. Bisping says it’s unfair to change during the last week and wants to have it up for grabs in the next fight, which coincidentally features his best fighter. Henderson says it’s not really fair and Bisping decided that he’d talk it over with his team. Bisping was a major prick.

Bisping’s team says they won’t change and they go to tell Henderson. Bisping and DeMarques have words and then later, as they are about to lineup to announce the fight, Bisping squirts water in his face. DeMarques throws his hat at him. He says it’s because he made a racist statement about him being whiter than a band-aid, but it wasn’t really him who said it. It was Dollar. And plus, are band-aids white?

Bisping went to apologize and DeMarques didn’t want it. He needed to calm down.

Video – Jose Canseco Vs. Hong Man Choi

Published by GG under Dream, Mixed Martial Arts, Video

Earlier this morning, Jose Canseco fought Hong Man Choi in the first round of the Super Hulk tournament at Dream.9. He lasted probably about a minute longer than anyone thought he would, but he still went down to the big man.

(I have no idea if this video is going to stay up or not, so if it doesn’t, I apologize and will try to find another copy.)

You can check out the results of the entire show at AngryMarks.

Guillermo Rigondeaux Pro Debut

Published by Duan under Boxing, Review, Video

Guillermo Rigondeaux made his long anticipated pro debut Friday night in Florida. This guy is an all time great amateur. He won two Olympic gold medals for Cuba (2000, 2004), and two world amateur championships (2001, 2005). There was a lot of excitement when it was announced that he would finally turn pro. He is now living in Miami, and is training out of the same camp as Yuriorkis Gamboa and Erislandi Lara.

UFC 98 Live Play By Play – Pay Per View

Picking up here where GG left off on the live coverage. Joe and Mike are hyping the card. I’ll start the coverage when the first PPV fight starts.

Sean Sherk Versus Frankie Edgar
Sherk does look a little different than he usually does, a bit smaller and not quite as cut, but I don’t think it’s a significant as I thought it would be based on the reports I’ve read. It could be attributed to the fact that he’s now 35 years old. Or maybe he’s not taking as many supplements.

Round 1 – Edgar throws a high kick right away. Lots of circling and jabs by both, feeling each other out. Edgar lands a nice combo while Sherk is struggling to overcome the reach disadvantage. Sherk stuffs a single leg takedown attempt. Edgar gets a takedown off a Sherk leg kick. Sherk back up. I think That was Edgar’s round

Round 2 – Sherk loading up with his shots, but not landing much. Good action, but nothing real noteworthy. No guy with a dominate exchange, but so far Edgar is getting the better of the exchanges. Sherk looks a little frustrated. Sherk takes a kick to the nuts. Sherk has not attempted a takedown in 2 rounds. Easily Edgar’s round.

Round 3 – 45 seconds in Sherk uses a double leg to take Edgar down, but Edgar back up 20 seconds later with no damage. Sherk with a little trickle of blood near his eye. Edgar still picking him apart. Edgar blocks a single leg. Edgar is landing lots of shots, but no combos to speak of and neither fighter has been in any danger. Another stuffed takedown and catches Sean in a guillotine. Bell rings. Edgars round. I have it 30 -27 for Edgar.

All judges have it 30-27 for Frankie Edgar and the FGB’ers are all 0-1 so far with our predictions.

Chael Sonnen Versus Dan Miller
Miller is from Sparta, but somehow I doubt he’ll yell, “This is Sparta” before the fight. He’s also on a 10 fight win streak. Ref Yves Lavigne is getting a lot of heat from the crowd.

UFC 98 Live Play By Play – Prelims

Published by GG under Mixed Martial Arts, Play by Play, UFC

I will be covering the prelims live at the show and Cactus Jim is going to be covering the PPV part of the show. I will send him any necessary notes live.

The only things of note that I’ve read are that Sherk’s body looks completely different than usual and also that Serra had a hard weight cut.

I’m heading over to the MGM Grand in about 1/2 hour and the prelims start at 4:45PM, so check back around that time.

1. George Roop vs. Dave Kaplan

Kaplan came out to Tina Turner’s We Don’t Need Another Hero.He also is wearing pro wrestling trunks and a “Dr. D.” David Schultz perm style mullet.

The round was all on the feet save for a late takedown by Kaplan. Roop got the better of it and used his length advantage. Kaplan’s nose is bloodied.

Kaplan won round two using his wrestling. He wasn’t able to keep Roop on his back the first few times he got him down, but did so at the end of the round. Most likely 1-1.

Third round was good. Roop was scoring standing while Kaplan was trying to take it to the ground. Kaplan got him down once, was immediately in side control and then was in mount position seconds later. He couldn’t keep him there. It was a close round.

Winner: George Roop by way of split decision.

That would’ve been my call.

2. Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Brandon Wolff
