WEC 38 Play By Play – Faber Vs. Pulver II/Varner Vs. Cerrone
This is the last of the four big shows this weekend. I’m watching this on tape delay.
Craig Hummer and Frank Mir are ready to take us home.
1. Jose Aldo vs. Rolando Perez
These guys are 145′ers. They’re selling Aldo as the real deal on the feet. It was a kick boxing match for the first few minutes until Perez tried to throw a low jab and Aldo met him with a knee that sent him down. Aldo followed it up and finished him on the ground with strikes. That was pretty impressive. He ran out of the cage and into the crowd before coming back into the cage.
Winner: Jose Aldo by way of 1st round TKO
2. Mike Campbell vs. Danillo Villefort
These guys are fighting at welterweight. Villefort is a good deal taller than Campbell. Campbell was getting in some good strikes and put Villefort down. Villefort went from uma plata to knee bar, but Campbell got out. Then Villefort got the mount on Campbell’s back and stopped him via strikes.
Winner: Danillo Villefort by way of 1st round TKO
3. Scott Jorgenson vs. Frank Gomez
These guys are fighting at 135. Gomez is a half foot taller. Jorgenson immediately put on a guillotine and Gomez was fighting it, but never fully pulled out of it. Jorgenson then locked one arm behind the other, sort of like a reverse rear naked choke and Gomez had to tap out.
Winner: Scott jorgenson by way of 1st round submission
4. Jens Pulver vs. Urijah Faber
It was a fast first round. Faber caved in Pulver’s left side with a left hook and Pulver was hurt. He basically gave himself up on the ground and Faber tapped him.
Winner: Urijah Faber by way of 1st round submission
5. Donald Cerrone vs. Jamie Varner
This is the first fight to get out of the first round on the TV broadcast. Varner was opening up on his fight and then it went to the ground and Cerrone looked to pull on a submission which Mir related to what you’d do with a gui. Except he did it with his forearm and let. Varner then started to wail down with punches inside Cerrone’s guard, opening up a huge bump on his head. Cerrone got back up and held his own until the round ended. Big round for Varner.
Cerrone is stalking Varner. Varner is still landing hard punches, but definitely while backing up. He’s also scoring with takedowns and inside Cerrone’s guard. At the end of the round, Cerrone was looking for a triangle while Varner was trying to throw bombs from the top.
These guys are all about the sportsmanship now. They’ve slapped hands at least 3 times in this round. Varner blasted him and then took him down. Cerrone has a cut over his eye. Varner had a guillotine but Cerrone got out of it. Cerrone’s having a hard time seeing out of the right eye. Cerrone’s face is going to look puffy tomorrow.
Cerrone’s keeping Varner at bay with his lead leg. Cerrone went for an Arlovski, but Varner didn’t see it so he didn’t knock him out with the right hand. Cerrone can’t stop the takedown. Even when Varner whiffs, he stays with it, and eventually gets him to the mat. This is a really good fight. All the rounds are fairly close, but if Varner’s pitching a shut out, I wouldn’t be surprised.
They hug to start the fifth. Varner was on the ground and Cerrone hit him with a knee and he can’t continue. Varner can’t see out of his eye and the fight is over. When Cerrone started throwing the knee, Varner was crouching upwards, but then went back to his knees by the time Cerrone hit him. Since it wasn’t on purpose, they’re going to the scorecards.
Winner: Jamie Varner by way of split decision
One of the judges had it scored 48-47 for Cerrone.
