Video Vault – Last Year’s Royal Rumble Surprise
So last year’s WWE Royal Rumble was from Madison Square Garden. WWE usually busts out one or two little surprises during the Rumble matches, but last year’s was so great, that a LOT of people I spoke to, specifically those at the event, called it the coolest moment of all of 2008.
The #30 entrant turned out to be John Cena. John Cena was taken out with a torn pectoral muscle in the fall of 2007 and WWE told us that he would be out for nine months and would miss Wrestlemania. Now this wasn’t just a WWE.com-ish kayfabe angle because ALL of the elite pro wrestling insider journalists also confirmed that Cena was indeed going to be out that long.
However, he wasn’t. WWE “fooled the smarks” and Cena came back MANY months before his “scheduled” return. Dave Meltzer said, albeit jokingly, “He must have good genetics,” and many people believed Cena found some sort of miracle drug. I personally spoke with Cena at an FCW event and asked him about a totally unrelated “fake” angle where he “healed fast” and he gave me a look on my face of worry. Maybe he DID find a special medicine… eh?
But most likely what happened was he did get hurt and WWE played the injury out and milked it worse than it really was, allowing them to make the big splash on the PPV. Regardless of the circumstances, this was a big moment in Rumble history. Will we see another one this Sunday too?
[...] Last year’s show was pretty bland until the great finish where John Cena made a surprise entry into the match after everyone figured he wasn’t even near ready to be back from injury. Big D posted about it yesterday. [...]
