The Contender Season 4 – Episode 8

Published by Duan at 12:15 pm under Boxing,Review,TV Shows,The Contender

This week on The Contender we have our first Quarter Final match up as Felix takes on Troy.

Ryan is pretty beat up after his fight last week. He is taken to the hospital to get his cut attended to. He has to get stitches, and they tease that he may not be healed in time for his next fight.

The Gold Team is all disappointed that Tim didn’t get the decision after how well he performed. AK takes the loss to heart the most, and goes completely insane. He starts arguing with Troy, and then storms off on the rest of the team.

The teams are brought together as usual so that Rico and Ryan can enter their names in the second round. It’s just a formality as the only option available to them is to face each other. Danza tells the fighters that the team portion of the show is over now, and its time for each individual to try make their mark on the competition.

Danza takes the fighters out to see some of Singapore. They take a boat down the river which gives the fighters a chance to relax and take in some of the sights. Later, they all go out to a restaurant for dinner. Tony tells them a story about his time in boxing, and how one big punch landed him his role in taxi. He uses the story as a way to tell the boxers that their big break could come at any time.

When they get back to the house, there are pictures from each of their fights hanging on the walls. They look really iconic, and it makes their victories seem like a really big deal.
They also each got a latter of encouragement from their families
back home. Rico is delighted to find out that he has a new son on the way. Troy is moved to tears reading his letter.

Felix reads Alfredo a letter he got from his work. His employment was terminated because he was away for too long. He has given up his job for this opportunity.

Troy again attaches his daughters picture to his boxing boot before he goes to the ring for inspiration.

Troy Ross (18-1) vs. Felix Cora Jr. (19-2-2)
Both these guys are southpaws, and the fight gets off to a a cagey start. They both tried to fight at distance, but had difficulty establishing their range. Troy starts to land with one or two combination’s. Then towards the end of the round, Troy lands a massive left hook which drops Felix. Felix struggles to his feet, but is on unsteady legs. The referee notices the vacant look in his eyes and stops the fight. Two quick knock outs in two fights for Troy.
Winner: Troy (KO : Round 1)

Felix is very upset after the fight is stopped, but he still congratulates Troy on a great performance.
He is very disappointed in himself, and says that he will have to give a lot of thought to where he goes from here. Felix really came across as a star in this episode. He has this charisma about him which is completely unique. I think he’s definitely a guy people will want to see more of.

This was my favourite episode of the season so far. It did a good job of building up characters, while also giving you the sense that things were beginning to really intensify as we enter the quarter final stage. Next week we have the big AK vs. Alfredo fight.
