Rear Naked Ramblings – Affliction, Mosley/Margarito, and The Ghost

It seems that I’ve only been bringing this column out on crazy weekends like this, but I wanted to showcase some of the articles that have been written after Shane Mosley’s big knockout of Antonio Margarito and Fedor’s knockout of Andrei Arlovski.

In case you missed our coverage, we have the full play by play and blow by blow of how Mosley took down Margarito.

We also have the results of Affliction: Day Of Reckoning with details of how Fedor knocked out Andrei Arlovski with just one right hand.

The Ghost Is Back And Will Fight In San Jose In March
Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero took almost one year off because of issues with his former promoter Goosen-Tutor, but all he needed was 43 seconds to drop Edel Ruiz in his 130 pound debut. This allows him to be the local draw for a Golden Boy Promotions card in San Jose, which will also be on HBO as a “Boxing After Dark” card. The card will also showcase the hard hitting James Kirkland and huge prospect Victor Ortiz. I must find a way to be there.

Is Affliction In It For The Long Run?
Dave Meltzer’s article discusses whether or not Fedor’s performance was enough to keep Affliction afloat. With an estimated 3.3 million dollar payroll, last night’s “Day Of Reckoning” card is clearly a money loser, but they key is in stirring enough interest to be able to turn the money loser into a money winner. They can’t afford to pay Andre Arlovski 1.5 million to lose in three minutes. Oscar De La Hoya seems to think there are long term perspectives at least.

This is not a short-term relationship,” he said, giving the impression he was impressed by the prospects of a new sport for his company. “This is going to be a long-term relationship.”

Larry Merchant’s Option Is Picked Up For Another Two Years
This doesn’t have anything to do with last night, but it’s nice to see that Merchant is still going to be one of the main voices of boxing. Whatever you think of Merchant, you have to respect his insight and love for the sport.

What Was In Margarito’s Hand Wraps?
I’m sure more will come out of this pretty soon. It’s odd to think that in today’s age someone would try to pull off shenanigans in a major money fight considering the protections against something like that.

This is just me thinking aloud, but where do Mosley and Margarito go next? Bob Arum has stated that win or lose, Margarito would fight Miguel Cotto again. But wouldn’t you rather see Mosley in a rematch with Cotto now? And does Oscar De La Hoya try to get his buddy Mosley back in the ring for round three? Based on each’s last fight, I’m not sure Oscar wants to face last night’s Mosley. But they could always head up to the next weight class, which would at least make it a stronger fight for De La Hoya. I’m not sure how many diehards would want to see that again, but it might stir a bit of interest for the casual fans. Though, in order to sell that fight, you have to bring up Shane’s steroid allegations since they supposedly occurred during their 2003 fight. I’m not sure Shane wants to go through that.

We’ll have live play by play of tonight’s Royal Rumble and should also have some coverage of WEC 38 as well.
