Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Wrestling – Episode 5

Trishelle is the only girl left and she says that she has to do well to stick around.

I keep spelling Knobs name wrong. I spell it Knobbs. Oh well.

Eric Bischoff calls out Dennis Rodman and for some reason, Rodman says that it’s a man’s sport and calls out Trishelle. I think that was a worked line.

They’re joining the teams together since Team Nasty only has 2 competitors left. They’re doing a battle royal for the main event.

Their first move of the show is to learn how to go over the top and the duck and boost, which is ducking a clothesline and boosting the guy who is running towards you over the top rope. Todd skinned his nuts on the top rope going over. He said it was his “special purpose” that got hurt. Butterbean went over and it wasn’t a nice fall.

Dustin didn’t want to do the duck and boost because his shoulder was hurting. Dennis threw one of the trainers out and he landed on his hand and had to go to the doctor.

Trishelle threw Dustin over and hurt his shoulder again. She thinks he’s faking. Butterbean says he’s a wimp.

Bonaduce finally shows up.

RVD shows up and Knobs calls him one of the greatest finishers in the business.

Video Vault: Rampage vs. Silva II

Published by Big D under Mixed Martial Arts, PRIDE, Video

So last week, we put up the fight between Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson from PRIDE 2003 GP. Here we have the long-awaited rematch for the PRIDE Middleweight Championship from PRIDE 28.

Rampage demanded a rematch and these guys plain and simply do not like each other. Last time the both competitors met, it was after both having exhausting fights earlier. Rampage foughts UFC Icon Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, while Silva went the full 15 minutes with Two-Time Judo Gold Medalist Hidehiko Yoshida.

This time, at PRIDE 28, the PRIDE DREAM would be tested.

Before we show the fight, first watch the intro video and ceremony to the show to REALLY see the greatness that was PRIDE Fighting. Better video packages. Better production. Better stories. Nothing will ever have the full package like PRIDE.

Now for the fight

HBO Boxing After Dark – Paul Williams vs. Verno Phillips

Published by GG under Boxing

Before the Williams vs. Phillips fight, Chris Arreola and Travis Walker fought toe to toe for just over two rounds. Walker looked great in the first round and the early parts of the second. He even put Arreola to a knee. Walker’s mouth piece fell out and the referee stopped the fight to put it back in. After that, it was all Arreola. He decked Walker twice in the second round and then in the third round, he dropped him flat with a left hook and that’s all she wrote. Arreola looked very heavy and slow, but talent wise, he was the better fighter. He probably needs to drop some pounds, but it didn’t matter on this night.

Paul Wiliams vs. Verno Phillips

Williams just fought two months ago on Versus and is already back in the ring. It’s not like he had to work very hard.

R1

Williams is huge. Phillips caught him with a left hook that didn’t seem to bother him. Bob Papa just said that Phillips is a 21 year pro and he’s only been stopped once. Williams is cut over his right eye from a headbutt. Phillips landed the two best punches of the round, but Williams probably out-landed him 2-1.

R2

Williams landed a big left while Phillips was coming inside. Phillips is putting his head down and diving into his overhand right. I think he’s surprising Williams with his aggressiveness. They had a great flurry near the ropes at the end of the round. Williams was teeing off and Phillips was punching out of it.

Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Wrestling – Episode 4

Dustin says that Erin should’ve stayed and Nikki should’ve been eliminated. That’s kind of how it looked.

Bischoff meets the remaining 7 in the ring. Bischoff asks Todd who his favorite wrestlers were. Todd says Peter Maivia and the Great Mephisto were his favorite wrestlers. Dustin says the right answer and says Hogan and the Undertaker. Bischoff says all of those wrestlers were able to cut a promo. Can’t say I’ve seen a Great Mephisto promo before.

A different Todd who is actually the ring announcer is going to teach the crew how to cut a promo. He cuts a Hogan promo in front of the seven. It was a B minus Hogan promo. Todd cuts a nice promo on Nikki, but she couldn’t say anything back. Rodzilla choked the chicken on his promo. Rodzilla steals some of Hogan’s lines and the other Todd likes it. Dustin cuts a promo on Bonaduce’s character and Bonaduce gets personal with Dustin and touches him. Dustin slaps him in the face. I don’t think that was fake. But it’s not like Dustin slapped him very hard.

They are learning the hip toss, hitting the turn buckle, and the elbow smash. Dusty Rhodes should teach that one.

Nikki won’t do the hip toss. She’s a bit scared now and walks out of practice.

Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Wrestling – Episode 3

It’s been a month since I watched this show and it’s very low on my priority list. However, I do have some time this weekend and I want to see if I can catch up.

I don’t even remember where we left off, but I think Tiffany and the girl from Bewitched are gone.

And Willis is still wearing that hat.

Who taught Danny Bonaduce how to take a bump? I don’t remember bumping being a three step process.

Brutus needs to give Greg “The Hammer” Valentine a job. The Dream Team needs to make a comeback.

Hogan says he listened with his ears and heart when he wrestled.

He gives the remaining eight Jimmy Hart to help develop their character. Maybe he’ll teach them how to sing too.

Jimmy tells the girls that they’ll have to shake it but don’t break it in the ring. He says it’s all about showmanship. He tells them to pick out some gear.

Wait, the girl from Bewitched is still here. Ok, so Sly Stallone’s brother was the one who got kicked out. That’s right.

Jimmy’s disappointed in their choice of gear. Jimmy says Trishelle won’t be able to get a job at Kentucky Fried Chicken with what she chose for her outfit.

My Thanksgiving Wrestling Memories

Published by GG under NWA, Pro Wrestling, WWE

In 1987, the WWE created The Survivor Series to combat the NWA’s Starrcade. It was a Thanksgiving wrestling war, but in reality it was a Thanksgiving PPV war. Vince McMahon used his leverage as the king of PPV wrestling to strong arm the cable companies to only show his Survivor Series instead of showing both since the NWA was willing to move their show to earlier in the day (I think it was earlier).

My dad used to give blank tapes to a friend who had one of those pirate boxes and she recorded Wrestlemania III for me that way. Back in 1987, I didn’t know that Vince McMahon was telling cable companies that they had to only show his Survivor Series or else miss out on Wrestlemania IV. And really, they should’ve missed out on that terrible show. I was heartbroken when my tape showed Starrcade 87 instead of the Survivor Series. I wanted Hulk Hogan, not Dusty Rhodes. My cable company decided to call Vince’s bluff and showed Starrcade 87 instead which in retrospect wasn’t so bad at all because I really liked Starrcade even if history tells you that Chicago didn’t necessarily love it. And looking back, I can see why.

Even as an 11 year old boy, I knew that not putting the belts on the Road Warriors was a mistake. They were over big time live and the Dusty finish just left everyone watching really deflated. And though I thought Ronnie Garvin was a legit contender to Ric Flair’s throne, I don’t think the older wrestling fans did. Flair was getting cheered in their World Title cage match. But still, I was into it. I was always curious about why Dr. Death Steve Williams wasn’t ever in the title picture because on that night, I thought he looked like the toughest wrestler I ever saw after destroying Barry Windham. I wonder what would’ve happened if it was Dr. Death booked against Flair instead of Garvin.

I didn’t get to see WWE’s alternative until it came out on video tape many months later. But they were laying the seed to a Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant rematch after Team Andre defeated Team Hulk in their match. Hulk wasn’t even around for the finish. I just remember Bam Bam Bigelow doing somersaults.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Video Vault – De La Hoya / Vargas – Bad Blood

Published by Big D under Boxing, Video

With the biggest PPV drawing card – Oscar De La Hoya – about to step into the ring once again against Manny Pacquiao, in a few short weeks, I thought we’d look back a little bit here on FightGameBlog at some of his previous wars.

Many called this Oscar’s most satisfying victory in his professional career as he knocked out Fernando Vargas in the 11th round of the fight for the victory. Vargas had been calling out Oscar for many years, insulting the man and challenging him until finally, the fight happened on September 14th, 2002 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Book Review: Bret Hart’s Hitman – The Greatest Wrestling Story Ever Told

Published by GG under Pro Wrestling, Review, WWE

While reading Bret Hart’s Hitman: My Real Life In The Cartoon World Of Wrestling, you never get the feeling that he’s happy writing his memoirs. He does remember happy moments in his life, but you get the idea that he’s telling his stories with a chip on his shoulder. And if you understand the Bret Hart story, it’s not a surprise. But I truly wonder about those folks who don’t know his entire story like I do. I wonder if they think he’s just a bitter old wrestler. Because if anyone has a right to be bitter about wrestling, it’s Hart.

When I was growing up, Bret Hart was a tag team wrestler who Gorilla Monsoon called “The Excellence Of Execution”. I never thought he’d become the singles star that he did, winning the WWE championship on a number of occasions, and recently, on Wrestling Observer/F4W, a hardcore wrestling/history site, was voted the best wrestler who ever lived via a fan poll. When I was twelve, never did I think he would become that wrestler. He wasn’t huge in a big man’s game. He had good size for a normal human being, but not for a business in which being 300 pounds is a positive. But he was always the one wrestler who was believable in the ring. You couldn’t see much phony in his art. And he had this magnetism about him that wasn’t the result of pandering to the crowd. He was just good.

HBO: De La Hoya/Pacquiao 24/7 – Episode 2

Published by GG under 24/7, Boxing, TV Shows

Manny Pacquiao’s training is broken up into two parts. One is fundamentals and the second is sparring. Freddie Roach says that he has real fighters spar and it’s the real deal. Pacquiao says his goal is to throw a lot of punches so that there’s more action in the ring. Roach says if they knock Manny down, they get a $1000 bonus. Roach says he’s worried about Oscar’s jab the most. I think he should be worried about that thing Oscar calls his left hook as well.

Oscar says that coming down to welterweight actually increases his speed. George Lopez is on hand and says that no one since Oprah has won so much while at different weight classes. Ha! Angelo Dundee says he likes Freddie Roach but his kid is going to take a licking. De La Hoya also says that it doesn’t look like he’s going to retire.

Oscar plays with his kids and says that with his family with him, it gives him more strength and power. His wife Millie says that he’s a great dad. I wonder what his other baby mamas think about that.

Pacquiao dropped out of school at age 12 to work to help his family. Manny’s mom knows it’s dangerous work to be a boxer, but she knows that because of it, he’s able to give back to his people.

Oscar says his relationship with his dad was very cold. He doesn’t even remember having a real conversation with his father. Oscar said his father was so focused on him becoming the best and didn’t take no for an answer.

Roach says Oscar is a part time fighter and you can’t be sharp by being a part time fighter. Roach says Nacho is an asshole because he disrespected him and he doesn’t like him.

Pacquiao weighs his team and has a competition between them to see who can lose ten pounds. They will win $2000 and if someone loses fifteen, it’s $3000.

Dundee’s work is done. He thinks Oscar has all the answers for Pacquiao.

After twelve rounds of sparring, Nacho said that he made some tactical mistakes and was a bit reckless in his attacking.

He says that he’s out there to prove that he’s not over the hill.

There’s a cool montage played to Eminem’s Till I Collapse to end the show.

WWE 2008 Survivor Series – The Aftermath

Published by GG under Aftermath, Pro Wrestling, WWE

This year’s Survivor Series was not a well received show. I actually thought it was ok, but my FGB brothers hated it.

Let’s get to the feedback.

Big D

Show overall rating: Thumbs down

Best Match: Team Batista vs. Team Orton
Worst Fight: RAW Divas vs. SMACKDOWN Divas

Overall, the show was definitely NOT worth 40 or 50 dollars and is nowhere near as epic as it should’ve been considering it was Survivor Series, WWE’s second oldest PPV tradition. You saw some decent wrestling and there were virtually ZERO backstage vignettes and one or two promos here and there, but mainly lots of in-ring action. The issue is, one great, awesome moment was not enough to warrant a purchase that big in these economic times. Honestly, the PPV was BORING for the most part…

But who cares because EDGE IS BACK! THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS NOW!!!
