Roy Jones Jr. To Face Joe Calzaghe In September

Published by GG at 11:25 pm under Boxing,News

While the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. super fight may no longer be taking place this year, another super fight has been signed. Roy Jones Jr. is set to challenge Joe Calzaghe for his light heavyweight championship. It’s a fight that Calzaghe has said that he wants, and Jones Jr. obliged.

According to Dan Rafael’s story, Jones Jr. is also promoting the fight, which is scheduled for September 20, and will be held in Madison Square Garden. Jones Jr. asked Don King to step aside for this one so that his Square Ring could promote the fight, according to the article.

It could be a chance for Jones Jr. to find out if Square Ring can be his career after boxing, but at 39 years old, he’s already talking about going back to heavyweight.

“They call Samuel Peter ‘The Nightmare,’” Jones said. “I’ll give him a nightmare. I like to do stuff people think I can’t do. But I am really looking forward to fighting Joe first.

It’s a bigger fight than Calzaghe’s fight with Bernard Hopkins, which was Calzaghe’s first in the US, and is probably the biggest money fight that he can get. While this fight would’ve been a much better fight years ago, it wasn’t the right place and time for both guys, but that time and place is now.
