EXC – CBS Saturday Night Fights: Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith II Play By Play

Published by GG under EXC,Mixed Martial Arts,Play by Play

The first three fights of this card are on Showtime and the rest on the CBS show.

The announcers are Gus Johnson, Mauro Ranallo, and Frank Shamrock.

1. Wilson Reis vs. Bryan Caraway

These guys are fighting at a weight of 140 pounds. There must’ve been some heavy blood in the dark match as there was a few different splatterings of blood on the mat inside the cage. Caraway started off by throwing two big rights that made Reis stumble a bit. But Reis immediately took him down. Reis is a BJJ guy and Caraway is a “cowboy karate” guy, whatever that means. Reis stayed more active and was able to keep Caraway on his back with the single legs.

Caraway is hitting Reis at will, but the second he does, Reis immediately takes him down. The crowd is booing the ground action, but this is not simply controlling someone on the ground. Reis has been active in trying to move forward, while Caraway is active in trying to combat Reis’s jiu jitsu.

UFC Fight Night, Affliction, Dream 5, The Great American Bash – The Aftermath

We had coverage for every show last weekend. Here’s what we thought about all those shows after thinking about them for a few days.

UFC Fight Night

GG

Show overall rating: Thumbs in the middle

Best Fight: Anthony Johnson vs. Kevin Burns
Worst Fight: Brandon Vera vs. Reese Andy

There wasn’t really a top notch fight, but I thought Johnson and Burns was the best until the lame stoppage. There were some fun knockouts with Rory Markham and Anderson Silva coming to mind, and a great submission by CB Dollaway, but the show was really just there. If Silva had a better opponent, I think the fight could’ve felt bigger. But James Irvin wasn’t going to cut it, and he showed why, taking a beating. Brandon Vera’s terrible performance took a lot out of the show as well.

“Hate it Or Love It, Big D’s On Top” – Monday Night Raw

Published by Big D under Pro Wrestling,WWE

It’s the RAW after the Bash as WWE prepares to head towards SummerSlam, their supposed 2nd biggest PPV of the year (I always thought Survivor Series was #2 and SummerSlam was #3, but oh well).

Loved: Unique Open. Batista in the truck with Kevin Dunn watching the tape just screams “WCW Nitro”, and that’s been a lot of the focus with RAW lately. WWE is trying to shoot things from different perspectives and add new “sets” to things rather than stick with the boring formula of match-angle-match-interview-interview-match-angle-match. Thankfully, RAW is bouncing things around.

Hated: Clusterfuck Intro. How many times does WWE have to start a program after a PPV with every top guy coming out and laying claim to the World Title. Granted, it does make the World Title seem important because everybody is chasing it and trying to get it, but it’s been so overdone and played out that it is ridiculous. Guys coming out and talking all the time is boring. Figure out something else WWE!

Video – Andy Lee vs. Willie Gibbs

Published by Duan under Boxing,News,Video

Top middleweight prospect Andy Lee returned to the ring Saturday night, in front of a sold out crowd in his hometown of Limerick. Lee was coming off the first loss of his professional career, a controversial stoppage at the hands of Brian Vera. Prior to this setback, he was being lined up as a challenger for current middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik.

The 24 year old Lee, trains out of the world famous Kronk Gym in Detroit, under the tutelage of Emanuel Steward. He had gone 15-0 with 12 KO’s before the loss, and is commonly regarded to be amongst boxing’s best prospects.
