EXC – CBS Saturday Night Fights: Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith II Play By Play
The first three fights of this card are on Showtime and the rest on the CBS show.
The announcers are Gus Johnson, Mauro Ranallo, and Frank Shamrock.
1. Wilson Reis vs. Bryan Caraway
These guys are fighting at a weight of 140 pounds. There must’ve been some heavy blood in the dark match as there was a few different splatterings of blood on the mat inside the cage. Caraway started off by throwing two big rights that made Reis stumble a bit. But Reis immediately took him down. Reis is a BJJ guy and Caraway is a “cowboy karate” guy, whatever that means. Reis stayed more active and was able to keep Caraway on his back with the single legs.
Caraway is hitting Reis at will, but the second he does, Reis immediately takes him down. The crowd is booing the ground action, but this is not simply controlling someone on the ground. Reis has been active in trying to move forward, while Caraway is active in trying to combat Reis’s jiu jitsu.
Round three started out exactly the same way. Caraway opened up on Reis, Reis takes some big shots, and then gets a single leg. The announcers mentioned that Caraway dislocated his kneecap two weeks ago. That might be why he’s going down so easily. It looks like when Caraway jumps inside with the knee, Reis eats it and then takes him down. That’s been the story of this third round. Reis won the first two rounds strictly from taking him down and working the ground, but Caraway probably won the third because of his stand-up.
Winner: Wilson Reis by way of unanimous decision
2. Rafael Feijao vs. Travis Galbraith
Galbraith was training for a 185 pound fight, and just last week, had to put on weight for this fight as he was a last minute substitution. Feijao threw about 4 big knees and Galbraith finally went down and the after one or two punches on the ground, the fight was stopped.
Winner: Rafael Feijao by 1st round TKO
3. Justin Eilers vs. Antonio Silva
The CBS show is supposed to start in just over 5 minutes and this heavyweight championship fight hasn’t even started yet. That tells me that CBS is going to have a bunch of pretaped stuff ready when they go live.
Referee Herb Dean took one point away from Silva for hitting in the back of the head. Eilers looked good early on with great head movement, but he never hurt Silva. Silva took him down a couple times, and near the end of the round, it didn’t look like Eilers wanted to get in close with Silva. With the point deduction, it was probably 9-9.
Eilers started the round with a left hook and all it did was wake up Silva. He jumped all over him. He threw a big knee and just followed up with lightning fast punches. Eilers couldn’t respond and tried to hang on, but it was stopped.
Winner: Antonio Silva by way of 2nd round TKO.
Silva is the new heavyweight champion.
The CBS card is now underway.
When did Frank Shamrock get braces?
4. Shayna Baszler vs. Cristiane Cyborg
This is a three round fight with three minute rounds. Weird round. Baszler was on the bottom trying to get a bunch of different submissions. She even figure four leg locked her leg. But Cyborg was in control and on top for most of the round.
Round two was all Cyborg. In the middle of the round, Cyborg knocked Baszler down and thought the fight was over. She even jumped on the top of the cage. Baszler took advantage of the time to rest before Cyborg realized it wasn’t over. But it just made Cyborg angry and she threw punch after punch to finish her off with a straight right hand.
Winner: Cristiane Cyborg by way of 2nd round TKO.
They showed Gina Carano smiling at ringside.
5. Nick Thompson vs. Jake Shields
This is for the EXC welterweight title.
Shields immeidately took down Thompson and got the mount. He was trying to ride Thompson and Thompson was trying to buck him off, using the fence. He turned him over, but Shields locked a guillotine on, while he was on top and got the tap out.
Winner: Jake Shields by way of 1st round submission.
Shields is the EXC welterweight champion. He just told Gus Johnson that he wants to unify the title against whoever wins between Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch. Way to put over the competition.
6. Nick Diaz vs. Thomas Denny
Diaz started talking trash to Denny as they met in the center of the ring and CBS immediately muted the conversation. Denny was game early on, but Diaz wobbled him. And Diaz isn’t really a hard puncher, but he just throws a lot of punches in bunches. There were a couple spots where I thought Denny was going down, but he didn’t. Lots of action, but lots of pitty patter boxing too.
Diaz ended it early in the second round by stopping him with punches.
Winner: Nick Diaz by way of 2nd round TKO.
Gus Johnson tried to ask Diaz a question and he did his own thing for about a minute and Gus just gave up.
7. Scott Smith vs. Robbie Lawler
They took way too much time before getting these guys in the ring. It was agonizing waiting for this fight to start. I can’t imagine they held all their viewers from the Diaz fight.
Lawler dominated much of the first round with his striking as it was an all stand up round. Smith had a flurry late in the round to score some points and try to steal the round. Lawler just looks too big and strong. Smith is game though.
The second round was great. Both guys were scoring and these weren’t peppering shots like in the fight before. These were hard punches and elbows. And both guys ended up leaving the cage bloody. Lawler connected with hard knees and followed up on the ground after Smith went down and Herb Dean stopped the fight.
Great follow up to their first fight. Lawler keeps his title. He was so excited that he started to dance. It looked like the adrenaline overtook his rhythm, but he kept dancing.
Winner: Robbie Lawler by way of 2nd round TKO.
