UFC – Shamrock vs. Ortiz III Play By Play

Published by GG under Mixed Martial Arts,Play by Play,UFC

Ken vs. Tito. Tito vs. Ken. Part III. Not like Part I or II were very competitive. Not like Ken Shamrock actually has a chance to win this fight. This is pretty much a gift from Dana White for the 750,000 households who bought their second fight on PPV, making it a bigger money event in the United States than Wrestlemania. The fight was stopped prematurely in most fans eyes and the event itself was horrendous. Thus, we get fight number III which is fine by me. While it shouldn’t be that competitively, it’s still entertaining because Tito Ortiz understands how to play the bad guy better than pretty much anyone and Ken understands how to do business correctly.

Before Their First Fight

There are also three other television fights with four fighters from The Ultimate Fighter reality show. The first match-up is season 2 fighter Seth Petruzelli versus season 3′s Matt Hamill. Ed Herman and Kendall Grove, both from season 3, also have fights tonight, though not against each other.

We’re already ready for the first fight. Petruzelli and Hamill is up. I guess they don’t think that much about Seth (who will be named Seth from here on out because I’ll be here all day trying to spell his last name) because I know they think a ton about Hamill. If you don’t know Hamill’s story, he’s been deaf since birth and is an awesome wrestler. He showed a ton last year and Tito Ortiz decided to bring him onto Team Punishment. Seth is just a guy who throws wild spin kicks.

Round One:

Hamill immediately shoots in and Seth is going to have to be good at fighting from his guard if it continues to be that easy. Hamill has had a problem in the past with dropping his hands and though he has heavy hands, someone is going to catch him. Though it might not be Seth. Hamill dominated from the top and Petrazulli has a nice shiner already. Easy round for Hamill.

Round Two:

Starting round two, this one probably won’t go the full round. There’s a huge slice underneath Seth’s eye that is just ripe for a stoppage. Actually, if he can avoid getting hit there and keep the bleeding to a minimum, the blood would probably not get in his way. He drops Hamill to the floor and Hamill actually grabs his leg and puts Seth back on his back. That was close for Hamill, but that wrestler mentality means you always think you have a way out. And he did. Big John orders them back up as neither guy did much. This is probably to Seth’s advantage. Matt shoots in again and Seth sprawls but still gets taken down. Hamill starts throwing some daggers from the top and this isn’t a good spot for Seth. Joe Rogan thinks Big John might stop it because the bleeding has started again. Kind of uneventful round otherwise and Seth’s face is a mess. There’s the cut under the eye and one on the bridge of the nose. Rogan says that the cut under the eye hurts him when he’s on his back, which is something I didn’t think about. Hamill wins it again just based on positioning.

Round Three:

Seth throws a few kicks and Hamil immediately takes him down again. He gets in a nice elbow from the bottom but Matt is just digging everything into Seth’s face. They get stood back up and Seth gets in a guillitine but it’s not locked in and Hamil escapes. He hits a spin kick on Hamil who was trying for the take down. Hamill gets him down again. Seth seems tired. Big John takes a look at Seth and decides that they can finish out the last minute of the fight. Matt hits another big takedown and it looks to be pretty much over. Hamill wins a unanimous decision and even does extremely well in the post fight interview with Joe Rogan. Hamill definitely needs to work on everything other than his wrestling, but he’s an awesome story and someone you want to root for.

Ed Herman is fighting Jason MacDonald. This is going to be interesting to see where Herman is. He is very talented, but when we saw him last year, he wasn’t all that impressive until the finals, and he lost that match.

Round One:

Herman went for a side headlock, and then remembered he wasn’t fighting Randy Orton and then got a take down. MacDonald gets Herman in a possible choke, but Herman gets out of it. MacDonald locks a triagle choke on Herman and Herman is fighting it. Herman looks like he’s trying to drag him around the ring and there’s still 2:31 left. Herman taps out just like that. I wonder if Dana is kicking himself for giving Herman that contract now. Rory Singer is smiling somewhere. And maybe he peed on Ed’s gear in the back.

MacDonald says that if UFC brought him in here to be Ed Herman’s stepping stone, he’s no stepping stone. Ouch. Ed apologizes to his fan base and his family because he fought like blank. Ed says he should’ve gone to sleep like a man instead of tapping like a bitch. I guess you can say bitch, but not blank tonight.

Kendall Grove is next facing some young man named Chris Price. I wonder if Dana White is crossing his fingers that lightning doesn’t strike twice.

They interview the buff Jim Carrey who fights Anderson Silva this weekend. Lots of people who know more about this stuff than I do think Silva should actually be the favorite. I only saw him destroy Chris Leben like I’ve never seen a man destroyed before. Franklin is so big and strong and lankey, but man Silva’s hands weren’t only fast, they were accurately heavy.

It’s Kendall Grove vs. Chris Price time.

Round One:

Kendall seems very active and he’s working a bunch of things. He finally gets on top, but Price immediately gets out of it. Grove gets on top of him and starts to throw from the top. Price is pinned up against the cage and Kendall is dropping elbows from the top. The entire time this is happening, Rogan tells us that Price isn’t in trouble, he’s defending himself, and all of a sudden, the fight is stopped.

They show a commercial for the next episode of The Ultimate Fighter and hype up Matt Serra against Shonie Carter. Carter beat him before early in their career on what seemed to be a fluky spinning back fist, and now Serra wants his revenge. Good stuff.

A few things to note before we see the “Final Battle”:

  • They show Shamrock in the back and he doesn’t look all that big. And he needs a tan.
  • Ken Shamrock is either relaxed because he’s confident, or because he knows he’s going to make some money tonight.
  • Why does Tito come out to Eminem’s Mosh?
  • Where’s Eye Of The Tiger when you need it?
  • Tito might be relaxed because he knows that Jenna Jameson will show him some skills after the fight

Tito is fighting Chuck Liddell on Christmas Eve Eve, so basically there’s no mystery with this one. Tito is going to win. They are so confident that their signed main event for what could be their biggest show ever is a few months away and they’re not even worried that it will be spoiled.

Round One:

Tito just manhandles Ken into the fence. He picked him up like he was a child. Tito takes him down and Ken is in guard again. This looks like something I’ve seen before. Ground and pound time for Tito. Ken is defending himself much better, but in no way do you feel that Shamrock is getting out of this. Good night Ken. Tito threw about 6 or 7 punches to Ken’s face and Ken didn’t defend one of them. In a pro wrestling moment, Ken gets off the mat, Tito flips him off, and then Ken wants to hug. He tells Tito “thank you” in regard to helping Ken make a lot of money and agreeing to the third fight most likely. He also tells him that they made a lot of money together. That is very true. But in no way did you feel that this was a real fight. More like Ken getting in there for one more payday. But we knew that was the case when they signed the fight.

Did Jenna just mouth, “I love you,” to Tito? I think Tito said, “I love it too.” He meant he loved her too. Tito says that he’s going to box Dana White, but they don’t explain that it’s actually in Tito’s contract. When he re-signed with UFC, Tito wanted a sparring session with Dana White and Dana, being the business man, and a former amatuer boxer, agreed. Tito says that he and Chuck Liddell aren’t friends anymore and it’s business and he can’t wait to entertain. Ken pretty much just retired on screen. And he wished Tito good luck. Tito comes back to say that he’s looked up to Ken and thanks him for passing the torch. Where was all the hatred? If people don’t think this is exactly like pro wrestling, they just aren’t watching closely enough. I don’t mean in a predetermined way, just that everyone is marketing something.
